Lisbon Treaty

As important as NAMA is to the survival of Fianna Fail and also to the survival of the national banking system and hence economy, the big issue of the next couple of weeks will be the Lisbon Treaty take 2.

Many feel that a rerun of effectively the same referendum is an insult to the Irish people's earlier decision. Indeed, in re-entering the 'No' vote campaign yesterday, Declan Ganley described it as profoundly undemocratic. I tend to agree that the government is taking advantage of our current economic strife. They've planned the vote perfectly, just before the 2010 budget. The Irish people will feel somewhat forced to vote 'yes' based on the premise (or perhaps promise!) of better economic times as a result.

My 2 cents, I think it's currently over complicated. I think we should vote yes for the following simple reasons:

- It would actually be an improvement if Europe had more control over us (the Shinners need to get with the times). In my opinion they are certainly more credible then our current government.
- Ireland relies heavily on its reputation. A 'No' would be damaging to this, particularly from a foreign direct investment perspective.
